Can I use the basic lamp modules with lamps that have those new-ish fluorescent light bulb replacement? I'm not sure if I would need an appliance module instead.
Any help appreciated.

generally speaking no.
more specifically speaking, some people have used them as long as you don't dim the lamp module. But of course this is risky since stray x10 signals might result in dim signals.
even more specifically, some CF bulbs do supposedly support dimming, and those would be ok to use w/ a lamp module.
