I'm using Verizon DSL with a Westell model 327 modem/ router (wired) along with Sygate personal firewall. Do I need the software firewall with the router or does the router offer enough protection on it's own, and if so, what are the settings I would need to be aware of? Any help is appreciated.

Well, if you're not concerned about outbound that the router cannot stop, then you don't need Sygate. I myself didn't trust the NAT router and supplemented the protection with a PFW solution. Some people don't supplement the router period and get along just fine without one.
If you're asking the question, then it must mean that you're thinking you don't need one, which is fine.
