Per your recent recommendation, I have uninstalled Outpost and am now running MS Windows' firewall. My computer is running much more smoothly, and while MS doesn't have the bells and whistles, it is really far easier to use than the Agnitum product. That it comes free is a plus, too.

Just make sure that you monitor the exceptions list and services list since apps can add their own settings without you knowing about it - which means your machine will be exposed without your permission.

Wow, what a bullshit. Of course this doesn't work, except when you're a member of the Administrators group - and in that case you've already lost anyway, and the same applies to any other host-based packet filter.
It's not BS, as most users running XP machines ARE ADMINISTRATOR level accounts.
If the person is a limited user, they won't be posting here in most cases as they already know how to secure the machines.
Now, address the statement - you know, as well as any competent security type, that most users run as Admin accounts and that means that Windows Firewall is almost worthless in their hands.
As for your statement, I run as an Admin account on this machine, have done so for more than 2 years (this specific machine) and never been compromised and never had a problem with my firewall application on it.
So, unless you can start thinking before you reply, you've not provided ANY help in your reply.
