Hi, am looking for a hardware based solution to put on the edge of the network of our dorms so that we don't have to go around and install anti-virus individually on each student's pc. Is there anyone out there that has any experience and recommendations for a hardware based anti-virus appliance?

Your idea is not going to work - as there is nothing your "hardware" device can do about malware on the users computers. Each year we handle several sororities that return with their computers infested with many different forms/types of malware, once cleaned they generally stay clean, but we impose FireFox and a quality AV solution that updates daily on them.
Your solution would not protect them from each other.
