E-mail problem with Norton Personal Firewall

Since replacing an earlier version of Norton Personal Firewall with NPF 2005, I can't send e-mail from Outlook Express or Mozilla Thunderbird unless NPF is disabled. Symantec's tech help has made many suggestions, none of which cleared up the problem. Has anyone on this NG had this problem? If so, how was it solved?

I had this problem twice with norton Internet security 2005:

1st time: Go to the Anti spam tab, click "Anti Spam" and then "Turn off". That fixed it. I never used it anyways, so I left it off.

2nd time: An update screwed up the applications list. Fixed it by going to "personal firewall" then "configure" then "programs". I selected the programs one at a time and removed all of them. After that I clicked "program scan" and it reconfigured all of the programs. E-mail worked again.

Hope this helps,

-Nate

The computer has Norton Firewall and Norton System Works, neither of which includes Anti Spam. Our ISp provides a spam filter, and Mozilla Thunderbird has one also. Not much gets past these two checks.

I've had this happen on another computer. The fixes Symantec recommended were complex and time consuming, and didn't work. Full uninstalling and reinstalling did work that time.

This is one of the things Symantec recommended. Unfortunately, it didn't work. I'm considering uninstalling and reinstalling both Norton programs, having no other ideas of what might help.

Thanks for trying.

I removed both Norton System Works 2005 and Norton Personal Firewall 2005 with the SymNTR.exe utility from symantec.com. That did a more thorough job than WinXP Add/Remove programs, including removing registry settings, but it must have left some info on the computer because I was not asked for the product key when I installed the programs again. I installed NPF first, then NSW, and the problem sending e-mail is gone.

Is someone from Symantec watching this NG? This is the second time I've solved a problem with Symnatec software by doing a full reinstallation. That was not recommended to me by Symantec's help programs, but it took less time than some of the things they suggested that failed to solve the problem. I'm now reluctant to recommend Symantec's programs to anyone who isn't proficient in computer maintenance.
