I have ipcop setup with 2 nic cards. I'd like to add 1 or 2 more. If I try and add the same kind (make/model) I can't get it to work. Do that nic's need to be different makes and models??

No, but quite often similar cards have the same default settings in terms of IRQ and memory addressing, hence they don't get recognised. You can : assign IRQ by slot in the bios or get a management program for the card (if one exists) and change the settings. E.
