switch auto polling

Mar 11, 2010 1 Replies

Hello, everybody

reading through specs of switch ASICs I often find the term "auto polling". What exactly does it mean? As I understand it is hardware assisted feature of the switch, constantly monitoring PHY status and updating related MAC registers in the switch. On the other hand, it can be possible to disable this option and monitor PHY chip status register entirely with software.

Is this correct?

Thanks in advance.

PS. I guess sometimes autopolling is substitued with link scan ?

Good question. Sorry I don't have an answer for you. Hopefully someone will notice. This looks like a very quiet group. Ed
