Problems with 7206vxr-npe400

Hello, The last month or so we have had some issues with our 7200. All the protocols(LDP,OSPF,sometimes BGP) appear to bounce with dead timers and the CPU goes up to 100%, weird thing is that it happens during off- peak hours (Sunday, early morning weekdays). We are mainly a voice provider with some internet. The router has 4 channelized DS-3s to the DS1 level fully populated and 2 fastethernet uplinks. The fastethernet uplinks show a number of drops with flushes.

the two fast ethernet interfaces (counters were cleared about a day before this): Input queue: 0/150/28287142/77 (size/max/drops/flushes); Total output drops: 0 Input queue: 0/150/987356/1703 (size/max/drops/flushes); Total output drops: 0

At first we thought it was an OSPF issue and LDP, BGP were just bouncing because they didn't have route resolution since the routes were not there, but I am pretty sure the protocols bouncing is a bi- product of something else. Any help will be appreciated. thanks

  1. No, I wish I was able to capture, may put something together to mail me or notify me somehow and run that command.

The fast ethernet link is facing our Datacenter LAN that eventually gets out to the internet and a number of other services. there is about 5 ospf neighbors that are also 7200s running similar load and the same code that are not showing this behavior. We also have about

10 IBGP peers with MBGP running for our L3 vpns, running LDP with all of them.

FYI Cisco has yanked IOS 12.3(22) and replaced it with 12.3(22a). Not that this is related to your issue but just so you are aware.

So how do you recover from this problem or does it just "pass" ?

Can you get any command output from the console while problem is occurring ?

Do you have logging buffer enable on the outer ?

Can you post the output of "show process cpu" as the router is running now ?

Does this router directly face your client's routers ? (i.e could this issue be triggered by something occuring one one of your clients ? _)

BTW Are you seeing a high number of FE interface input drops on the other 7200's.

Dropping 28 million packets over a day or so is not insignificant

Reply to
Merv

It looks to me that you have exceeded the capacity of the routing engine. Having that many drops on the FE interfaces is not good and is a good indication that you just can move that many packets through it. The good news is that a hardware upgrade to an NPE-G1 or G2 should fix this. The NPE-G1 and G2 have 3 10/100/1000 ports on the CPU, which do not take any bandwidth points. In addition the G1 and G2 have a much more efficient routing engine and can move more packets than the NPE-400. What could be happening is that you are exceeding the capacity of the router, and as soon as you hit that point everything falls apart very quickly. Its a very fine line between everything is great, to very bad. We had a similar issue with the NPE-400's, and upgraded them to G1's about 2 years ago, which fixed the problem.

Scott, I will agree with you for the most part, but why does the problem happen during off peak hours? The router is at about 8-10% load and hardly any traffic is going through it.

Merv, Yes the problem just passes and I can never get to the router fast enough to log any information at the time. I have logging buffer and a syslog server, nothing significant in the logs except for the protocols dropping.

Yes, the router is doing aggregation so it is facing quite a number of clients(about 100) connected with T1s, I also wonder if it has something to do with what they are doing, but no way to verify. I have pondered enabling cflow for traffic analysis but I am a little hesitant due to already mentioned load.

Thanks all for your attention on this.

I would drill down on the cause of the packet drops on the one Fast Ethernet interface

It is quite possilbe that with that rate of input drops that OSPF hellos may get dropped.

Do you have any SNMP polling set up / could setup so that you can see the traffic pattern on the FE interface that has the high drops.

Another question, when an "event" occurs how long are the OSPF /BGP adjacencies lost for ?

Do the 7200 FE interfaces connect to a switch or to another router ?

Hi Sal,

Could this be a routing issue, in that the network is re-convirging due to an activity elsewhere and loading up the CPU? We had a similar issue related to this after a new path was implemented and needed to alter a lot of remote interfaces to passive (using EIGRP). Oddly enough, ours was a7206 that was gettig busy as well, however most of the changes were needed at other points in the network. Ours was triggered by a path outage, so was at irregular intervals.

Cheers............pk.

we swapped the router just in case it was some obscure hardware issues. I am not sure how relevant this output will be.

Look like a fair amount of ARP traffic.

Is proxy ARP disabled ?

you might want to turn on debug arp brief ly to see where the ARP traffic is coming from

On FA 0/1, almost 2 million packets were process switched versus 28 million being fast switched

Compared to Fa0/0 where there where there were 400K process switch packet versus 95 Million fast siwtched

I would investigate the cause of the amount of process switched traffic on FA 0/1

Please post the output of "show ip traffic"

I tlooks like there is a fair amount of OSPF traffic.

Is this a single area OSPF network ?

Can you post
