This is a question directed to you cisco folks. We have multiple 515e's at out site and they are all 100 megabit. Is there an option to upgrade them to gigabit? One solution proposed is take a 2 nic (gigabit) linux box and build firewalls that way. I can see the need for gig comming. What are other old pix users doing?

You can get gigabit cards to PIX 515E and there are two card slots. I don't know if you can add more than one giga card, but if you can then you will need also an unrestricted license because then you have a total of four interfaces. But I don't know if it is worth trying because PIX 515E is not designed for speeds like that.

Well, I can see 10 Mbit coming in a few years (at the moment our fastest internet line is 2 Mbit). I think that I have plenty of time to study how to build giga-Linux-firewalls.
the 515e backplane doesn't push enough traffic (throughput) to make gigabit worthwhile, the 525 barely does, you want yourself a 535 to drive a couple of gig if's. Of course this assumes you're actually going to push more than 100Mb sustained traffic across the gig if's rather than go gig just because everything else has gig if's standard these days. Oh and if you're pushing enough traffic to go a 535, you're a big enough customer that Checkpoint, Juniper and other vendors would be willing to try and do you a deal.
