Connecting two switches - crossover required?

Hi all,

I have always been of the understanding that whenever you connect two switches / hubs a cross over cable is required. Can someone explain how "Auto MDI/MDI-X" works and what it stands for. We use the Cisco Catilyst 3550 and have always used crossover cables to interlink them.

Thank,

Paul

Auto MDI-X is automatic detection of that a cross-over is needed, and a small bit of internal reconfiguration to compensate.

[It doesn't have to be switch to switch -- it could also detect that you have used a cross-over cable to connect a host when you needed a straight-through instead.]
