Cisco Terminal Server

Hi All,

Can some one explain how the 2511 works as a terminal server. I want to place my lab in the loft due to the noise of it all when its up and running.

If I was to buy a 2511 and Octo cable, how do you communicate through the 2511? Through ether or the 2511's console port?

If its ether, does that mean that the ether port is tied up just for terminal server access ?

Cheers

You then simple telnet to the loopback interface on the specified port to get to the console of the equipemnt.

I'll try.

Ethernet.

No.

Each serial line is accessed (usually these days) via telnet. You choose a different telnet port for each line.

Here is one with 32 lines, 33 - 64, no I don't know why they start at

  1. Line 65 is the AUX port which you can use in the same way.

Line(s) not in async mode -or- with no hardware support:

1-32

You telnet to tcp port (2000 + line number)

To access the FIRST line, line 33, you use port 2033.

e.g. with windows telnet it is.

telnet 1.2.2.2 2003

I beleive that other protocols can be used e.g. DEC LAT, MOP, IBM?

We have line 33 64 no exec-banner exec-timeout 5 0 no activation-character modem InOut no exec transport preferred none transport input all escape-character 27 stopbits 1

Very interesting thanks !

So basically I would have to keep the ip of ethernet0 to be 192.168.1.* so that my computer can always access the terminal server no matter how I set up the other equipment.

Is this the best way ? Or would it be better to make a long (20 ft) console cable up and keep the ether0 interface free on the 2511.
