Cisco Buffer Misses on 2970s

Hi, we have 20x 2970 gig switches in on of our sites.. one one of them i get lots of buffer misses... could this be a case of speed and duplex mismatch or faulty memory? thanks in advance.

The joys of GBE.

You have no packet drops recorded on the interfaces so quite a lot is OK. Zero of no buffer ignore throttle in drops out drops Good. (if you believe the counters - I do, maybe:).

A possible cause is a burst of packets arriving requiring to be processsed by the CPU.

You could if you fancy reduce the number of misses by increasing the permanent buffers to cover the "high" figure. Or increase the "min free". I just do the permanent when I want to worry about this.

Make SURE that you have enough memory. Many modern platforms have a /lot/.

check "lowest", and why not base your decision on "largest".

Leave several meg spare too.

Err on the low side for the buffers. The buffer misses may be causing further misses (e.g while it is processing one miss more packets are arriving) so go gently, increase a bit at a time.

There are some good docs on CCO.

The chances are though that your switch did not need to see these packets anyway (Windows broadcasts) and if everything is OK you probably don't need to worry.

I would probably gently raise the buffers 'til it was mostly eliminated. I would not worry about the last few.

If you wanted to find the culprit put sniffer on network, save all packets to disk, use snmp to probe buffers (I assume that you can) and when the buffers misses arise, look at the sniffer.

The likely duplex missmatch on Gi 0/4 is a MUCH more serious problem
