We purchased a refurbed Cisco 3640 router. It seems to just drop it ethernet interface connection at random. We are just using this thing as an internal gateway router. There are no WAN or T1 connection in to this router. Does any have any thoughts on how a NOVICE user could go about trouble shooting this issue?

get a replacemnt ;-))
I would hard-code and verify speed and duplex settings. Mismatches can sometimes manifest themselves as 'dropped connections' although your are more likely to see a constant, slow connection...
