Another Question on the 877W

How on earth do you enable 802.11b? My 802.11g devices can find the router just fine, but the 802.11b devices cannot. What gives?

interface Dot11Radio0 no shut no ip address ! encryption mode ciphers tkip ! ssid xxxxx authentication open authentication key-management wpa wpa-psk ascii 7 01D ! speed basic-1.0 basic-2.0 basic-5.5 6.0 9.0 basic-11.0 12.0 18.0 24.0

36.0 48.0 54.0 no dot11 extension aironet

The speed line MUST include the 802.11b rates, maybe they are missed out.

I have been unable to figure out what the "basic" bit means. It is critical though.

Unless you have exclusively cisco kit turn off the "extension aironet" as is done here too.

Many thanks. I tried what you suggested, but I am still not able to see the router from .11b clients.

Any other ideas? I read somewhere that OFDM interferes with .11b clients but I can't find where to disable this....

Thanks, Matt

Like for like config:

interface Dot11Radio0 no ip address ! encryption key 1 size 128bit 7 BC48CE99C4E9B683819990D3C1A5 transmit-key encryption mode wep mandatory ! ssid ***** authentication open ! speed basic-1.0 basic-2.0 basic-5.5 6.0 9.0 basic-11.0 12.0 18.0 24.0 36.0

48.0 54.0 station-role root no dot11 extension aironet bridge-group 1 bridge-group 1 spanning-disabled

I'm not sure what "no shut" command does, but my router doesn't seem to like it.

So, I can see this router from 802.11g devices just fine, but it is not visible to 802.11b devices at all.

Desperately need some pointers on this.

TIA Matt

OK. I tried that here and mine does not work either.

May get a chance to investigate later.

no shut takes the interface OUT of the Administratively down state.

Cisco is a bit weird, but nice too, so called "default" states do not show when yuo do a show runn.

If you instead do a shut then you wil see "shutdown" in the inteface config.

Then you "no shut" to remove it. Many commands are like this, you have to get to know them.

There is of course the OTHER default.

THat is the one that you get when you reset to factory default.

i.e. "write erase" is the (possibly no longer recommended?) command that I use for this.

Some commands also appear in the config no matter what their state.

This sounds really crap I guess but it is OK once you get the idea and the benefit is that the config file is shortened.

IIRC some platforms have a "show runn all" that may show the defaults too. Don't think that I have ever tried it.

With traditional routers ALL interfaces are shut by factory default. This is for safety. With switches they all are no shut by default. This is for convenience.

With 877, half and half, switch and router, some are shut and some are not? This is partly due to the need for consumer level users to have a Power-up-and-use-Web-Browser interface. For professional users having all interfaces shut is what they want.

When considering that this may be unnecessarily confusing consider how many platforms that carry out how many different functions that cisco have made and do make that have a substantially identical command line interface.

Once you hack the 877 you are then able to drive almost any switch or router that they make or have made. Please don't bother listing the exceptions for my benefit. By all means list them for Nordberg's.

If you could look into it, that would be great. I'm going to try and get hold of a Cisco support bod from our supplier and see if they can help.

I do love Cisco, but this should be an easy task and not something that should require so much effort. A simple tick box in the SDM that says "Allow Backwards Compatability for 802.11b clients" would suffice!

Cheers, Matt

YOu could have a look at

HR#deb dot11 ? client Debug flags/info for uplink (repeater) mode operation events IEEE 802.11 events forwarding 802.11 AP forwarding mgmt 802.11 Management packets IEEE 802.11 packets

virtual-interface 802.11 virtual interface

YOu will need conf t logg buff deb logg buff 100000 end

clear log

If you are telnetting to the router

terminal monitor

formatting link
is your friend.

RE:- 877W fails with 802.11b.

This one works with 802.11b/g card set to b only.

Intel BG2200.

interface Dot11Radio0 no ip address ! encryption mode ciphers tkip ! ssid HR authentication open authentication key-management wpa wpa-psk ascii 7 xxxx ! speed basic-1.0 basic-2.0 basic-5.5 6.0 9.0 basic-11.0 12.0 18.0 24.0

36.0 48.0 54.0 station-role root no dot11 extension aironet no cdp enable bridge-group 1 bridge-group 1 subscriber-loop-control bridge-group 1 spanning-disabled bridge-group 1 block-unknown-source

I had basic-[greater-than-11] which was stopping it from working.

It looks as if basic means 'required' or 'must be present'.

Basic = Require in the SDM. I figured that if anything of 11.0 was set to basic, then 11b devices won't see it. So I removed all speeds greater than

11.0 completely and that didn;t make any difference either.

Comparing your last post to your first post, the speed settings are identical. The only thing I can see different is the "no cdp enable" line which I've added to no avail. Have I misunderstood something?

I spoke to my suppliers post-sales dept who were a waste of time. I've been scouring TAC for a solution but so far I've found nothing new. Everything points to the speed ratings being the problem.....

The show interface dot11radio0 command shows:

Current Rates: basic-1.0 basic-2.0 basic-5.5 6.0 9.0 basic-11.0 12.0 18.0

24.0 Allowed Rates: 1.0 2.0 5.5 6.0 9.0 11.0 12.0 18.0 24.0 36.0 48.0 54.0 Best Range Rates: basic-1.0 2.0 5.5 6.0 9.0 11.0 12.0 18.0 24.0 36.0 48.0 54.0 Best Throughput Rates: basic-1.0 basic-2.0 basic-5.5 basic-6.0 basic-9.0 basic- 11.0 basic-12.0 basic-18.0 basic-24.0 basic-36.0 basic-48.0 basic-54.0 Default Rates: basic-1.0 basic-2.0 basic-5.5 6.0 9.0 basic-11.0 12.0 18.0 24.0 36.0 48.0 54.0

Which leads me to believe it should allow 11b clients...but it doesn't. Argh! Why is it so difficult.......I'm obviously missing something but I cannot for the life of me see what......

Have you any further ideas?

Many Thanks for your continued help on this annoying caveat! Matt

Didn't see your IOS version in any of your postings, but on any wireless ISR (85*W, 87*W, 1811W, HWIC-AP) you should be sure to be running at least

12.4(2)T4 12.4(4)T2 12.4(6)T in order to avoid this:

CSCej57894 Externally found moderate defect: Resolved (R) ISR router does not broadcast SSID
