837 IOS Upgrade

I am new to Cisco routers. I just bought a used 837, managed to configure it and it is working fine. Its IOS is an older version and wont work with the latest SDM. Is there a version of SDM which will work with my 837's IOS version?

Or maybe I should upgrade the IOS but later IOS versions I have seen require larger memory than my 837. Does anyone know of an IOS which will work with SDM and which will work with the memory level of my 837?

Thank you

Currently my 837 has:

IOS (tm) C837 Software (C837-K9O3Y6-M), Version 12.2(8)YN, EARLY DEPLOYMENT RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1) Synched to technology version 12.2(11.2u)T

CISCO C837 (MPC857DSL) processor (revision 0x400) with 29492K/3276K bytes of memory. Processor board ID AMB07170HFG (3265805387), with hardware revision 0000 CPU rev number 7 Bridging software.

1 Ethernet/IEEE 802.3 interface(s) 1 ATM network interface(s) 128K bytes of non-volatile configuration memory. 8192K bytes of processor board System flash (Read/Write) 2048K bytes of processor board Web flash (Read/Write)

I have run 837s with less then the recommended memory

memory-size iomem

was the key.

*HOWEVER* note that you might easily end up with a router that won't boot which will require recovery with xmodem and confreg fidddling.

Of course I was not using SDM and the extra memory might be needed for it:-)

check your memory usage with sh mem

router#sh mem Head Total(b) Used(b) Free(b) Lowest(b) Largest(b) Processor 83099124 70676188 29800736 40875452

38709808 36842076 I/O 7400000 12582912 3948464 8634448 8513040 8517372

paying particular attention to I/O and see if you can change the iomem percent and still have a workign router.

If I could find a copy of SDM Express I'd try that. Maybe it doesn't require as much memory as the full SDM

I've searched but cant find it.

Its the standard SDM but only uses a subset of the files required for the full SDM.

This is a directory listing of the flash, with the basic IOS installed as well as SDM express on my 837:

System flash directory: File Length Name/status 1 8229236 c837-k9o3y6-mz.124-23.bin 2 2802 sdmconfig-83x.cfg 3 1038 home.shtml 4 112640 home.tar 5 931840 es.tar 6 1505280 common.tar 7 242285 attack-drop.sdf [11025576 bytes used, 1295188 available, 12320764 total]

12288K bytes of processor board System flash (Read/Write)

If you want to use the SDM it is best to start with the configuration they provide in the .cfg file, then use the GUI. I didn't actually use the GUI for configuration, but find it helpful sometimes for viewing stats of the ADSL interface.

Thanks. Andrew.
