1711 - remove fixed WIC card?

HI all. I have a Cisco 1711 which I have been using for some time with my existing internet connection. I have decide to go with a new ADSL internet connection and so wondered if I can still make use of the 1711 by removing the existing fixed WIC-1AM card (I have carefully removed the studs) and replacing it with a WIC-1ADSL. I know this would be an unsupported configuration but don't really care as it is just for home use. On boot I get the error

Smart Init is enabled smart init is sizing iomem ID MEMORY_REQ TYPE MainBoard 0X00027A80 1711/1712 0X000F3BB0 public buffer pools 0X00211000 public particle pools VPN 0X00030C0C VPN Module Buffers

0X0064 0X0000DC00 Card in slot 0 0X002E 0X00000000 UNKNOWN Card in slot 1 TOTAL: 0X0036AE3C

And the atm interface just doesn't show up. I have tried upgrading the IOS to the latest and greatest currently running c1700-k9o3sy7-mz.124-2.T1.bin and have tried several other images but still no go. Am I wasting my time trying to get this to work? I thought that it was probably just the same the 1720 inside. Any help much appreciated and save me buying another router!

Well I realise that it isn't on the list of supported configurations as the existing WIC cards are fixed into the chassis, but just wanted to know if anyone has tried to do this before. I would have thought the actual hardware being used is the same as the 1720/1721.
