Pix 515 password reset

We have a pix 515 that we are trying to reset the password on using the Cisco password reset utility. We can get it to download the TFTP file (nppix.bin) for version 4.0 just fine but it never starts the utility it just sits there after downloading and we have to powercycle the unit to get it back up. Anyone seen this before or know how to fix it.

Are you sure your using 4.0 pix software? Thats increadibly old! The nppix version MUST match the version of software you are running. You can get that by doing a "sho ver".

Another thing to keep in mind, even after you do a sucessfull removal of the password is that it WILL still prompt you for a passord. When it asks for the password simpy hit enter.

When booting up it said Pix software version 4.0 so we used the nppix.bin file which said it was for Pix 4.3 and earlier

Let it boot fully then do a show ver, don't rely on the boot messages.
