I am a cisco newbie. Can anyone tell me how to shutdown a switch? What commands should I use?

I use a single command ... gavin, pull the plug on that switch.

You can't. If you want to power off, pull the plug.
Just remember to save the running config to nvram ... "wr mem"
There is a command to shut down a switch, I use: 'Oi pleb, pull that plug out'
Switch the power switch off slooowly and pull the power plug slooowly. :)
