ICS problem help please......

Hi everyone. Can someone please help with this. I have two identical computers and have Windows 2000 Pro in both. One access's the internet, the other is connected with a xover patch cable and file shares with no problem. Am unable to connect to the internet with second.

DHCP enabled on all 3 nic's. Seems that APIPA is addressing the xover nic's due to not being able to detect dhcp server. Have tried maunally seeting all fields in both comps with same outcome.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Have you got a DHCP server serving you with addresses? You will need one on your network to get address leases.

Your best bet would be to configure static addresses on the internal interfaces of the internet connected PC and the one trying to access the internet. The GATEWAY of the second one shoud point to the ICS PC internal NIC.

RobO, Here are the setting as read in ipconfig These have been set up manually.

wireless card DHCP enabled ip = 192.168.0.102 mask = 225.225.225.0 gateway = 192.168.0.1 dns = 192.168.0.1

LAN#2 manually set ip = 192.168.0.111 sub-mask = 225.225.0.0 gateway = 192.168.0.1 dns = 192.168.0.1

2nd comp LAN ip = 192.168.0.112 sub-mask = 225.225.0.0 gateway = 192.168.0.1 dns = 192.168.0.1

Hi,

Your subnet masks appear to be incorrect unless its a typo. Something to this effect on all the internal PC's:

255.255.255.0

They should be the same on all the PCs that are directly connected to each other.

Thanks Rob, changed over all sub-masks to 255.255.255.0 Ran internet wizard and re-booted. Still no internet on 2nd computer.

This morning I tried connecting the 2nd directly to the router with the cable and the internet worked fine so computer is ok... its just when trying to access it thru the first computer.

Any suggestions please.....

Hi,

Not entirely sure of your topology but is the first computer the ICS PC???

Check your DNS settings (try and browse google like this:http://66.249.87.10) if it works then DNS is your problem, and the gateway on the ICS PC...???

internet ics pc1pc2

or

internet icspc1/pc2

Is this correct or am I way off the mark???

Check that your ICS pc has the correct DNS settings from your ISP but somehow I think you will need to add a route on the PC in between!!!

Regards,

Rob

Typed in the http://66.249.87.10 in the 2nd computer and it didnt find google. First computer still finds the internet with no problem,

Maybe you could explain how to add a route. You are being very helpfull here, I hope we can figure this out. it is really appreciated.

Yes, the ICS is the 1st computer with wireless internet card.

Wireless internet card in 1st laptop w/ ics patch cable 2nd laptop

These are my new settings, I changed the sub-masks to the same values of

255.255.255.0

wireless card DHCP enabled ip = 192.168.0.102 sub-mask = 225.225.225.0 gateway = 192.168.0.1 dns = 192.168.0.1

LAN#2 manually set ip = 192.168.0.111 sub-mask = 225.225.255.0 gateway = 192.168.0.1 dns = 192.168.0.1

2nd comp LAN ip = 192.168.0.112 sub-mask = 225.225.250.0 gateway = 192.168.0.1 dns = 192.168.0.1

No problem, According to the last post the subnet masks are still not matching

255.255.255.0, they still showing up as 225.225.225.0 ....some of them atleast.

NB!!! The LAN interface of the ICS laptop should be :

192.168.0.1

Check this out>

(www) | [dhcp]PC1 [lan1pc1-192.168.0.1] [sm-255.255.255.0] [dns1-isp_dns1] [dns1-isp_dns2] [gw-empty] | (lan) | [lan1pc2-192.168.0.2]PC2 [sm-255.255.255.0] [dns1-192.168.0.1] [dns2-isp_dns1] [gw-192.168.0.1]

I believe that will get you sorted but let me know...good luck!

Thanks Rob, Finally got it working, I changed the router ip address to

192.168.1.1 and seemed to have solved the problem. At lease I know now the computers are operating correctly. I have now changed over to dial up and having the same problems by not being able to access the internet with the second. I am using earthlink and see the ip address, gateway and the dns numbers and wonder what the rules are for using these on the second computer. I have played by using the auto obtain function and have used the same numbers but can not access the internet with the second computer. Any pointers here will be much help. Best regards, David...
