Why is the default wireless channel 6

A question. Why in most home router models is the default channel set to 6 rather than another distinct channel ? Is it because they figured to be in the middle of the band was the safest ?

Sorta. The bandpass filters and antennas are all optimized for the middle of the band. There isn't a huge difference between the center of the band and the end points, with low gain antennas. However, the high gain variety tend to be rather narrow and are often offered pre-tuned for a specific group of channels.
