WAN Miniport Function Q

Can anyone tell me in brief, specific, behavioral terms WTF this service does and/or what it is good for? I refer generally either to the National Semiconductor Macphyter version or the dumb AOL-installed version (I have both). All I have found on the 'net is; "it does some work." It also isn't clear whether it has any relevance to wireless.

Much TIA, frank

If im not mistaken, a WAN Miniport is used for connecting to ISDN modems.
