I am running Windows XP SP2 already, and have previously installed all
of the firmware updates available for the router. There were no driver
updates for the PCI card the last time I checked. I will try a USB
adaptor to see if it solves my problem.

Check your hardware settings for the PCI card in de device manager. In the "advanced" tab there's a setting for power savings mode. That should be disabled, otherwise your PC might disable your wifi card now and then.
