hi, since you are technically oriented, why dont you give the university of urbana champaign wireless (ucwireless.com) project a shot? you wont need any proprietary hardware other than old pcs to use as access points. antennas you can buy from hyperlink or rflinx. you can also use soekris boards. you havent mentioned whether you are going to give away the service for free or will it be a paid service. OpenwRT is also a good project if you have Linksys wRT routers
