Boost internal WLAN antenna?

Dec 07, 2006 2 Replies

Is there any way to boost an internal antenna in a laptop without either opening up the laptop and installing a connector or getting a separate wireless card with an antenna connector?

For example, could one get any boost in signal by attaching an antenna to a coil of wire attached to the back of the screen? (the location of the internal antenna?

Tester hath wroth:

Nope.

Nope. The internal antennas are fairly omnidirectional (spray RF in all directions). Your coil will only catch a small part of the signal on transmit. Maybe 10% coupling if you're lucky.

However, in receive, you could arrange a patch antenna next to the internal antenna and get close to perhaps 70% coupling.

Sorry, that would pretty much be a waste of time...

Cheers!
