AP with router and PoE

Hi all you knowledge wireless people,

We are looking for a Wireless access point with a build in router. And it should be possible to feed it with power over the Ethernet connection (PoE).

Somthing like this:

-----------------------------------> AP with Router Ethernet with PoE

The PoE comes from an injektor somewhere on the Ethernet which is not where the AP is located.

Do you know a product like this - then please respond with the product name here in the group.

Geetings from Denmark lasse.

A "wireless access point" is just the radio bridge part of the system. When you add an ethernet router and switch to the package, it becomes a "wireless router".

It is very common to find access points (no router) with PoE but no wireless routers that I could find. Are you sure you need to have the access point (radio section) in the same box as the router? If you're thinking of installing the radio on the roof with an outdoor pipe, it's easy enough to setup a seperate indoor ethernet router at the other end of the CAT5 cable. If you insist on having the router with the access point, you will need *two* CAT5e cables, one for the WAN(internet) and one for the LAN for configuration and local connections. I suggest you reconsider or explain what you are trying to accomplish.

Otherwise, you can always add 802.3af (PoE) power using external adapters. There are several different types. Be sure to get one that matches your hardware selection.

One version of Apple's old (flying saucer shaped) AirPort Extreme Base Station had built-in POE. It has been superseded by the current N model, but is still available from a few retailers.
