In brief, Voicestream was spun off from Western Wireless in 1999. Deutsche Telekom later purchased Voicestream and rebranded it as T-Mobile. Meanwhile, Western Wireless itself continued to exist as a regional carrier until being acquired earlier this year by Alltel.
