FCC ADOPTS ORDER TO CLEAR THE 700 MHZ FREQUENCY BAND FOR PUBLIC SAFETY AND NEXT GENERATION CONSUMER USERS

Washington, D.C. - Today the Federal Communications Commission adopted an Order and Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking prohibiting the further distribution and sale of devices that operate in the 700 MHz frequency band. This action helps complete an important component of the DTV Transition by clearing the 700 MHz band to enable the rollout of communications services for public safety and the deployment of next generation 4G wireless devices for consumers.

The order will primarily impact the use of wireless microphone systems that currently operate in the 700MHz band. These unlicensed devices cannot continue to operate in this band because they may cause harmful interference to public safety entities and next generation consumers devices that will be utilizing it. Thus, the Commission is making clear that no devices utilizing these frequencies may be sold or distributed. In order to ensure that individuals and groups currently using unauthorized devices in this band have ample time to transition to appropriate frequencies, the FCC is providing a sunset period until June 12, 2010, one year from the DTV Transition.

Ample time would be more like 10 years.

I wish the toothless FCC the best of luck in getting compliance.

I use a corded headset with my cellphone. It was cheap to buy (far cheaper than a Bluetooth), has good voice quality, and the cord is not a problem.

This has nothing to do with wireless headsets for cell phones. This is about wireless microphones that are used by many religious organizations, musicians, theatrical productions, schools, broadcasters, and more.

The larger and more professional groups know about this issue and typically have the resources to replace their equipment. Most of the smaller users have no idea about this and will only learn of it when their mics stop working when a wireless company turns on a 700 Mhz system in the area.

Compounding this is the simple fact that even if a smaller organization is aware of the problem, the often do not have the money to replace their existing systems.

Note that several of the major produces of wireless microphones are offering rebates to help defray the cost of replacements. A quick Google search will yield details.

Not to mention the enterprising souls who have figured out how to extract the tuners from old televisions and then use them to pump a modulated signal into the device of their choice.
