Nick,

First question would be: What accuracy is required??? By this I mean, to with in 3sqft, 20sqft, 100sqft, in given quadrant of the building, or just a general area on either floor????

And the next question would be to see real-time on a monitor, a report of daily activities or something different??

The answers will determine feasibility and maybe a price range.

Try contacting Olivetti. They had an "Active Badge" system in their research lab in Cambridge UK in the 90's. No idea if they ever commercialised the system. It was IR based and worked very well. I went to a lecture on the system. Any member of staff could interrogate it over the web/lan and find out where someone was, if they were in a meeting, nearest phone extension number etc

There was a phone system that did something like that a while back, it would track where you where and any calls for you would be routed to the nearest extension...business system not res.

The technology to do this is available with RFID. Google "RFID employee tracking" and you'll get an idea. Basically, you can setup portals that employees pass through or you can deploy antennas throughout the facility. RFID tags can be attached to the current access control/ ID badges and software allows management to track employees in real time even displaying the information on a facility map if desired. It's expensive and there are all kinds of big brother issues to consider, but the technology is out there. The real trick is integrating this into a secure access control system to be able to determine who can go where and when. We looked into doing this about a year ago, but all of our access control systems still use a very slow reader to panel communication format that makes it impossible to integrate RFID readers. There was a company that developed a RFID to weigand converter, but it would only work for small groups before the data crashed.
