Zigbee or Z-Wave based Wireless Smoke Alarms?

Is this technology (zigbee or z-wave) unsuitable to wireless security/alarm systems? What are RF technologies, for example, choices of frequency, modulation schemes, methods of encoding, currently being used in these systems? Are they all proprietary?

For wreless security you might look at the GE/ITI rf devices. These are supported by the Elk M1 series controllers, GE Caddx, Simon, etc. They are very reliable and economical and you may be able to integrate them into other systems using the ITI bridge.

For your families security I would steer clear of the HA vendors and protocols - at least for the time being.

Is GE/ITI RF technology proprietary or industrial standard? Is there a standard for RF communication in the wireless home security realm?

The manufacturers have to meet the standards set forth for operation in the frequency band that have been allocated to them. Other than that, each mfg has their own encryption protocols.

Is it a bad thing? It means there is no chance of inter-operability among devices from different vendors. There is no common panel which can monitor those devices. Correct?
