Gigabit copper fallback to FastEthernet operation

Greetings!

I'm looking for information about the mechanism by which copper Gigabit transceivers fall back to 100Mb/s operation when:

a) they're linking to a 100Base TX transceiver b) they're linking to another gig trasceiver, but don't have all 4 pairs connected

Can anyone point me to an explanation?

...and related to that: Is there a way to see into this mechanism in a Cisco switch?

I'm hoping for something like the Solaris 'lp_XXX_cap' parameters that might tell me about my link partner, and the number of pairs detected.

Thanks!
