Can a boot ROM redefine a MAC address?

Howdy,

For diagnostic purposes I would like to install a board with a preconfigured MAC address.

I know that most drivers permit changing the MAC from the OS, but Is this typically a configuration attribute accessible from a boot ROM?

Thanks!

Traditionally, it was on a separate ROM, read by the driver and then written to the MAC chip. It might be that now it can be done on one chip. In any case, the boot ROM is software, and should be able to do everything that software could normally do.
