Stack switches

I have 5 3500XL switches that I would like to stack together to form a single unit. This way I can have redundant uplinks to distribution layer. Should I cascade them using fiber or using the Gigastack module from Cisco? The reason I am confused is that if using fiber works, why would Cisco produce Gigastack where you only achieve half-duplex link between switch?

It's cheaper.

The gigastacks require less GBIC ports to stack switches instead of using the copper or fiber gbics to accomplish the same thing.

But if running half-duplex, would the performance be less than cascade them using fiber at full?
