not-a-legal-address

HELP!!

I have had my network team trying to figure out why we get "not-a-legal-address" when we try to resolve DNS hostnames from our Windows 2003 DNS servers. I think it has something to do with VLANs but cannot find any documentation that shows this specific error. This is twisting my brain, if anyone has any input I would really appreaciate it.

Thanks!!

Dan,

Are you trying to resolve the address, which resides on your DNS server (i.e. you configured the IP address for your internal server), or outside address? If server name and address is internal to your DNS server, check the following things:

  1. Server address is valid from the netmask perspective (i.e. it is not "network" and not "boradcast" address).
  2. It is not "loopback" address (127.0.0.0 - 127.255.255.255).
  3. It is within proper class (first octet of the address is less than 224)
  4. Check DNS server settings, for example, if you have IP6 enabled and address is IP6 versus IP4.

Good luck,

Mike
