Can anyone tell me if they've had any luck running VLAN on a Cisco router (ROAST) with Linksys or Netgear switches? I specifically refer to 802.1q protocol.

I've done Netgear. Why would you think there'd be any problems if everybody supports the IEEE standard? Pretty much the reason there are standards, that companies usually are compatible. Pretty rare to be incompatible that way.
That said, since the 802.1q capable switches are rare in the Linksys portfolio, you better read the data sheets carefully to find the few models that do support .1q trunking, and their capabilities. Netgear isn't quite so rare.
You'll still be looking at a $350-$600 switch to get this capability from either vendor.
