Layer 3switches

Hello

I have and ADSL connection with 8 public IP's

Can I use a Cisco layer 3 switch to NAT one of the public IP's to a private IP network, or would a router and layer 2 switch be a beter way of doing it.

I need the ADSL router to be a public IP because I have an email server attached to it with a public IP

any other ideas also welcome.

many thanks in advance

If all you need to NAT is one IP then a router/switch is your best bet (cheaper too).

Cisco layer 3 switches genearlly don't support NAT. Thats a function that routers or firewalls have.

I'd go with a firewall if you already have an ADSL router doing your basic line termination. There's many different firewalls out there, but they all operate at much faster speeds and packet rates than the low-end entry level Cisco routers.
