Can a PIX 506 / 506e be upgraded to use IOS 7.x ?
If not, is there any significant reason to replace the PIX 506 with a
515 ?

No, there will be no IOS 7.x for these boxes.
You might want to consider one of the new ASA 5500 devices instead. Besides that, it really depends on what you need.

Ah, yes - those ASA appliances are nice...
For small networks the 506x's are still OK performance wise - ~10,000 connections however is there any major liability with keeping them around or is it best to replace them?
