Help config Pix 501 . . . please

Okay here is the situation. I have been driving myself crazy trying to get this figured out but I am about ready to give up. This is my setup.

-Cable modem (DHCP) to

-Pix 501 (outside address->DHCP) (inside address->192.168.69.1 /24) to the rest of my network (192.168.69.X/24)

-I also have a Linksys switch connected to the Pix 501 and on the other end a Linksys Vonage router (192.168.15.1) I only say for information purposes, I am sure it will effect the access lists.

I can get it to work partially. I can VPN in and once in get back out, however all others on my home network can not get out to the internet if I can VPN in. Once I delete the access list I can get out from the inside network but can not VPN into the home network. I know it is a access list issue but for the life of me can not find a good way to create an access list for a dynamic outside address. Please help.

Here is the config for the can vpn in but no one can get out. (I know the access list is wrong. All the examples I found on the internet are about useless. I love it when the have access lists for networks that are not on the figure on the network diagram.)

get rid of this one : nat (inside) 1 192.168.69.0 255.255.255.0 0 0 by : no nat (inside) 1 192.168.69.0 255.255.255.0 0 0

on both of the cfg's

I assume it is client on 192.168.69.0 /24 that can't get out when you VPN in.

the ACl 101 doesnt makes sense -what is 192.168.70.0 ? also you need isakmp nat-t command added to your cfg since you run IP pool of same range as your subnet, you might wanna try this:

no ip local pool ippool 192.168.69.121-192.168.69.126 ip local pool ippool 172.16.1.1-172.16.1.5

no access-list 101 permit ip 192.168.69.0 255.255.255.0 192.168.70.0

255.255.255.0 access-list 101 permit ip 192.168.69.0 255.255.255.0 172.16.1.0 255.255.255.0

Okay I fixed those things and I am almost there. By the way, I can't explain the 192.168.70.0. What does the isakmp nat-t command do?

can get in and ping a couple of devices but I can not get back out to the internet. I also can not get the the pix (192.168.69.1). Also when I the pix gives me my ip (VPNd in) I get a 172.168.69.1 as a gateway. Is this correct?

Here is my config:

You can't do that with a PIX 501.

:I also can not get the the pix (192.168.69.1).

You can only ping your "closest" interface, unless you are using a management VPN.

Possibly accurate, but certainly not "correct".

:Here is my config:

:PIX Version 6.3(1)

You need to upgrade to at least 6.3(4), as there are significant security issues with 6.3(1) and 6.3(3). The upgrade is free from

6.3(1) to 6.3(4). Search cisco's site for "PIX security advisories" for more details.

:access-list 101 permit ip 192.168.69.0 255.255.255.0 172.168.69.0 255.255.255.0

I doubt you work for America Online (AOL), so it's not a good idea to be using their IP address space, 172.128.0.0 - 172.191.255.255

Your inside address space is 192.168.69/24, which is fine as that is part of the RFC1918 reserved private address spaces. But

172.168.69/24 is public IP space. The RFC1918 reserved private 172.* address spaces are 172.16.0.0 through 172.31.255.255. I suggest you choose a different IP space for your VPN -- something like 192.168.70/24 or 192.168.169/24 .

That is crap. Does anyone know why that is? I work with Cisco 3000 series VPN all the time (yes they are dramatically different from Pix) and they can. I suspect it is because there is no way to exit the . . . . . no that is not true because people inside the network are able to get out while someone is VPNend in. (At least I hope, I have not tried this yet) Any ideas?

I made the IP address change. Yes I forgot basic network 101 there for a minute. Thanks for the reality check.

:That is crap. Does anyone know why that is?

Going back out the same interface one came in would require communications between two interfaces of the same security level. PIX through 6.x does not allow that. PIX 7.0 does in some cases, but PIX 7.0 is not available on the 501.

Remember that the security model of the PIX is based upon security levels: lower to higher acts such and such a way, higher to lower acts this and that a way. Now which of the two ways should be used when one is going between two interfaces of the same level, particularily when one is working with UDP (which is directionless, so you can't tell "response" apart from "transmission".)

There are alternatives (of various degress of satisfaction) available for every -other- PIX 5xx model, but the PIX 501 does not support any of them.

*the penny drops* Ahh - that is what you mean and what to do ... (!) Sorry but I though you meant the inside clients could access the Net, when you VPN'ed in ..

What you may do is to creat the VPN group with Splittunneling and Allow local LAN access on the client software.

This way you can VPN to the inside, and whatevery public internet traffic goes directly from the remote client to the Net.

Alternative you must install a Proxy server on the inside interface-LAN, or have a router just after the inside, that can "turn" the packets for you.

btw the Nat-t is for NAT-Traversal of the IPSEC Packets.
