Books FAQ

I was looking for suggestions for Books on IOS so I Googled for "Cisco FAQ" as I thought "what books" would be a FAQ.

No joy,

is dated 1996, is there anything more up to date?

Anyway, any book recommendations for someone with a basic understanding of networking & routing but new to Cisco IOS? I'm not training for CCNE etc. I don't need enterprise skills, I just want to better understand how to configure a SOHO IP ADSL router other than via the Web interface. I have read various online tutorials and want to go a bit further.

Views on any of the books at

would be especially welcome.

O'Reily's Cisco IOS in a Nutshell is a good start. It has both a tutorial section and a reference section for many commands.

Also, search cisco.com. You'll find many how-to documents of varying complexity and depth.

Hi Ian,

You may wish to investigate the Cisco IOS Reference Guide:

as well as the Cisco Library ( direct links to ALL of the publishers of Cisco related Books ):

Any Cisco Press book has usually been very good to excelent. Obviously, they offer a huge range from beginner to very specialist, so you'll want to start with the beginner level books.

Unfortunatly, they tend to be very expensive, but in tech books, expensive usually means that they've had enough editors to get rid of most of the bugs and typos.

Cisco IOS Cookbook (2nd Edition was published December 2006):

It's a collection of short recipes for common IOS tasks, from beginner level (e.g. copying IOS image) to advanced topics (e.g. Stateful NAT Failover).

I bought three books to help me understand the Cisco equipment I was working with such as routers and PIX firewalls. All books are Cisco Press books and they are all excellent.

  1. CCNA Portable Command Guide ISBN1-58720-158-5
  2. Cisco Field Manual: Router Configuration ISBN 1-58705-024-2
  3. Cisco ASA and PIX Firewall Handbook ISBN 1-58705-158-3

I personally like the portable command guide as it is concise, cheap and totally relevant if you are only working with routers. It's helpfull even if you are not getting a CCNA cert.
