I'd like to know if anyone in this group has ever done hardware and software inventory. What software has been used and what results have been produced ?

A number of tools you can look at:
- Ciscoworks
- RANCID is quite good at configuration storage + hardware details in that
Or many places ask Cisco to perform an IOS discovery which produces exactly what your asking. I was under the impression that features of IOS discovery where in Ciscoworks (or due for integration).

Ciscoworks can do this quite well. Although I'm sure you could probably find something for free.
