For anyone interested, the Sybex CCENT study guide by Todd Lamle (ISBN
978-0-470-24702-0) does a great job in the area of subnetting. No "Magic Number" crap. He explains WHY the numbers are what they are, and his explanation really solidified it for me.
Much better than the Cisco books, and certainly much better than the Exploration courseware.
Unfortunately, the Lamle book isn't great on its own. At least in my opinion. It was the first book I bought, and it starts right out discussing things that I felt I needed more background for.
