Trying to understand the first (gateway) router hop

Hello fellow Net Techs

Trying to understand the first hop (Gateway) on broadband cable internet (Cox). I called in a trouble report. Tech said it was modem problem but I pointed out that I was hitting the Gateway (68.106.96.1) just fine so it seemed to be past my modem. He non-concurred. Said hitting the first hop did not mean my modem was OK.

Didn't just use traceroute but a large buffer size ping . ping - l 15000

68.106.96.1

Actually I don't understand why this node accept such a large buffer size. All other nodes will non-responded if the ping buffer size exceeds 1472

Anyone make sense of tech support statement or why so large a packet size can be used on that node?

Bob

============================================ FYI - This is what it looks like when everything is working

1 18 ms 20 ms 15 ms ip68-106-96-1.dc.dc.cox.net [68.106.96.1] 2 18 ms 16 ms 15 ms ip68-100-0-1.dc.dc.cox.net [68.100.0.1] 3 16 ms 13 ms 14 ms ip68-100-0-145.dc.dc.cox.net [68.100.0.145] 4 15 ms 15 ms 15 ms 68.1.1.6

The first 4 hops on from my PC are the same on a friends who lives 5 miles from me.
