Uh, well my 300Mhz unix server doesn't need to be clustered, because its faster than 10 of your boxes in series. It happily handles 100s of users and a 20 million row database, and it cost about $400. And to me, anything with YEARS of uptime is WAY too OLD and SLOW for me to consider using.
No one ever claimed that windows was a great OS, but its success is the reason that this forum exists and is widely available, so come to terms with it, you close-minded old man.

This newsgroup exists because of cable modem communications; it hasn't anything to do with Weendoze. Just because people like you will plug their Weendoze boxes into a cable modem does not translate into this newsgroup existing wholly because of you. The ubiquitous nature of Weendoze is not due to its technical superiority!!! It is due to the marketting "tactics" of M$ -- fair and or otherwise.
The subject of this thread concerned OOL blocking ports. Why did OOL need to resort to such draconian measures? Because of this "highly" touted M$ Weendoze and all of its rediculous security holes and flaws permitting the exploit of the internet. I get 100s of infected Ween- doze sourced emails everyday that I need to filter. They're not com- ing from VMS, unix, Macs, or otherwise. Granted, there are SPAMs that may originate from these other OSs but those are typically generated by actual intent, not because some virus/worm infiltrated the sender's OS. This "close-minded old man" using unix, Macs and VMS doesn't have a stitch of M$wares and yet he has to contend with this crap.

Well it really does. Because last years technology is already out of date, so for something to qualify with "years of uptime", it has to be antiquated by definition. But seriously, comparing server technologies with Windows is asinine. If you're using a VAX as a mail client/workstation then you really do need some help. And Im sure there are as many spammers using linux than windows. And there are security holes in all of them.
But getting back to the source of this thread, the right answer is simply to set your client to send on port 587 instead of 25, which none of you old geniuses pointed out. No vlans or tunnels required.....
Most mail servers allow you to "submit" mail on port 587, which cablevision isn't blocking yet. With Eudora you need to grab the "Esoteric" plug in from the "extras" file and put it in your mail eudora folder so that you get the "Ports" icon as an option. Then just change the SMTP port to 587. It worked out of the box with our Sendmail based server.
What I find interesting (but not surprising), is that instead of informing people about using the submission port, Cablevision suggests that you upgrade to a business service that costs twice as much. Typical Cablevision, doing everything possible to screw their customer base. You'd think that they would have learned with so many fleeing to DirecTV. Now they're going to blow the only good product they have left.

First, you again demonstrate your ingnorance. Why is it as soon as one mentions VMS it is a VAX. 20 years ago, these 32 bit machines were run- ing circles around your 8080/8086 boxes choking on DOS. There are still a good many performing meritorius duty in organizations around the world and many of those are critical applications. VMS also runs on Alpha -- a 64 bit processor and a leader in performance many fold when introduced. Alpha workstations fit on desktops (as did VAX workstations) in smaller footprints than most of the PeeCees of the same vintage and usually had better peripheral equipment (eg. SCSI over IDE). VMS now runs on intel Itanium 64 bit processors. I have one here with dual CPUs, 4GB memory and 2x 36.4GB Ultra 320 SCSI/15Krpm hard drives -- all for a price less than that of a single processor Alpha G5. I'm not dissing the Apple -- it is just the only other 64 bit environment that is readily comsumer available for comparison.
I never said that there were no holes in linux. There are certainly fewer in linux and/or fewer that have been exploited than Weendoze.
It is not the SPAMmer that bothers my emailbox as much as all of the virus infected PeeCee Weendoze boxes attempting to propagating their infection to others. In the Weendoze world, misery truly enjoy com- pany.
Oh really? Please list a few of these SMTP servers that will respond on port 587. I know that mine does not I have checked everyone of my customer's SMTP servers as well as other sites. No dice. Probably another one of Weendoze little secrets waiting to be exploited.
I agree. Windoze still can't even delete a file that is open by another user let alone handle an update without rebooting - unlike UNIX which had all these features that could easily have been implemented in Windoze with a little foresight on their part.
