To resolve this issue, please perform these steps on the USR modem on the AUX port:
Step 1: Set dip switches 3 and 8 down and all other switches up.
Step 2: Connect the modem to the AUX port using a rolled (console) cable and a Cisco modem adapter.
Step 3: Paste in this code at an enable (#) prompt:
configure terminal modemcap edit usrmodem misc &FS0=1&C1&D3&H1&R2&B1 line aux 0 modem inout transport input all lowcontrol hardware modem autoconfigure type usrmodem speed 115200 autoselect ppp !-- You can also use autoselect during log in. !-- However, this requires async mode interactive under the async interface. login exit
Note: You may receive errors on the autoselect lines.
Step 4: Dial into the modem.
You should get a router prompt.
Step 5: Issue the show line command twice and check if the speed of the AUX line is consistent.
If the speed of the AUX line changes, it is not autoconfiguring properly.
This means you do not have physical connectivity to the modem.
If you do not have physical connectivity to the modem, powercycle the modem and check the cables.
Issue the clear line aux 0 command.
Step 6: If you see garbage characters when you dial into the modem, the init string is bad.
You may need a different modemcap.
Issue the modemcap edit usrmodem misc &F1S0=1 command.
Step 7: If you see nothing (not even garbage characters) when you dial into the modem, reload the router.
Step 8: If the modem does not answer when connected to the router, but does answer when not connected to the router, issue the modemcap edit usrmodem misc &FS0=1&C1&D3&H1&B1 command.
