Slow wifi download compared to direct connect

My home network is WIFI 802.11g setup ( router, laptop, desktop PCI card etc.) connected to the internet via DSL that supports up to 3.0 Mbits/sec. The DSL bandwidth test website I visited showed a test result for download BW around 500 Kbits/sec. If I connect the laptop directly to one of the ethernet port in the router, I am getting 2.5 Mbits/sec (2500 Kbits/sec).

Is there any way to correct this problem? My laptop is a Dell710m running WinXP SP2, and at the time I am doing this test, no other system in the network is turned on.

Thanks for your help.
