Beware if ordering Compex WL54G card!

They have a new version of this card ("version 1A") but it's still

called the WL54G. It is a completely different card from the old

WL54G!!!! There is no Nitro support and no external antenna (the main

reason I ordered one).

What kind of idiots come out with a completely different product and

don't change the part number???

That's VERY common in the wireless biz. Several reasons;

  1. FCC re-certification can sometimes be circumvented by recycling the model number even though the guts are completely different by claiming it's a "change in board vendor" or some such manure.
  2. Retailers do not want to stock both the old and the new models at the same time. As soon as the new models appear, they will return the old stock to the distributor or manufacturer for credit as being unsellable or obsolete. Recycling the model number allows the retailers to deplete their stock gracefully.
  3. Most customers don't care as long as it works. However, in this case, the difference is apparently non-trivial.

That doesn't mean much when you think you are ordering an other like the one you have. In this case ordering apples gets you oranges, and not more apples.

They clearly differentiate between Version 1A and the old version ; )

It would have been nice to have changed model #'s, but at least they do tell you on their website.
