Alas, the e-books are encoded in DRM which pretty much spoils the

> * Unless otherwise stated, textbook activation expires after
> 5 months (*gasp*);
> * Activated textbooks are not returnable;

Do they use some proprietary Adobe DRM mechanism that makes them incompatible with non-Adobe PDF readers? Specifically, what about Linux platforms, where Windows-specific DRM measures don't usually work?
