In today's society, I think it is fast becoming a must to know where

You mention one reason is auto theft and hijacking which are I think are valid concerns. I would be curious to how well GPS (and predecessor systems) lead to stolen car recovery. Hijacking is pretty gruesome but fortunately rare.
But I'm curious as to what about "today's society" you mean?
