Using garage door safety beams

I suppose the beam has to be very near the ground because that's where a small child would be and I think that's the purpose of having the beams. I recall hearing of a couple of kids having their heads caught by the door and suffocating and I believe that's about the time the safety beams became standard equipment with automatic openers.

Perhpas, but most modern openers will auto reverse when they hit an obstruction before they get to full travel.

Most "properly maintained" garage doors will do that. When's the last time you had that checked out?? That's one of the first things I noticed about the new place we moved in to. The opener motor seemed to be having a really hard time raising the door. Turns out the installer didn't adjust the spring properly (left too much weight on the door). And the auto reverse feature was set so high the guy I called in to check it out said that it would have bent the track if it had actually hit anything (not to mention the nice dent it would have made in my Navigator.

yah...i know. I've been thinkin of adding a second set of beams about a foot or so above the low ones.

Where I am the batteries would last maybe a week, my garage temp easily exceeds 120+ in the summer.

I installed one of those voice alerts today with 3 pirs...works great! The lady wants 3 more now. They look a little cheap, but it works great.

We had the tabletop unit in the garage so we would hear as we walk tested the units (my crappy voice echoing through the neighborhood) anyway the neighbor came over and they want one too.

Better yet, they are on sale at ADI this week.

I agree, I have a Liftmaster and would love to have the safteyy beam tied into a chime that could simply go off when the beam was broken. We have lots of neighborhood kids that play with our kids (ie 5 years old). I just want to know when someone walks through the garage, but I don't want a motion sensor that's going to go off all the time. No muss no fuss. I don't care if it falses on our cats. Also they are mounted low because the safety beams are for small kids, not cars. My relay only clicks the first time, when the lights turn on. They then stay on for several minutes with no relay action. It just seems such a waste not to use the safety beam that is already there.

Welp this gadget is cool...it has an adjustable timer in each PIR you can set a window of time from 0 (trips every 0 seconds) to 3 minutes, so kids running around the garage can sorta be adjusted for...or you can turn off the main reciever and only use it when you want. It's pretty slick. I'm gonna order a few more for clients I know will want them.
