OT: Is this key logging story for real?

Supposedly hard-wired key loggers are installed on new laptop computers and then the info is sent to the US government. Sounds unlikely to me, but folks here are pretty smart, so maybe someone can either debunk or prove this allegation.

Taking another look at the photos makes me think this is an elaborate hoax because the cables and chips are photographed out of context, rather than connected to the laptop. Of course, simple common sense also makes me think this is a hoax.

To me as well. But I do know of parents doing this so they can snoop on their kids. The technology exists and it is getting used.

But I think no one knows where or how widely.

And yes, this is way OT.

Always check Snopes before re-posting a story that seems even slightly wild.

So why repost an obvious hoax?

Think about it from another angle, where's the money for doing such a thing? The bandwidth cost alone, not to mention the archive media, would dwarf any other items in any budget. It just wouldn't be cost-effective even if it were even close to being real. Besides, it's far easier to just use the the satellite mind readers. The latest ones even go through tinfoil hats!
