why is a Screened subnet f.wall more protective than a Proxy Server f.wall?

I recently read that a screened subnet firewall would provide more protection from an internet attack, than an application level (proxy) firewall.

I don't understand why. Is a screened subnet firewall the same thing as a screening router?

If so, I thought a screening router is not as effective as an application level gateway / firewall, since the app level one works at the application level and also the package level (not sure what 'package' means - TCP/IP packets?) :) Thanks for any help Jason shohet

wait, don't reply ;) I realize now that they are totally different... the screening router is a type of firewall, whereas the screened subnet is a type of firewall ARCHITECTURE.... Thanks
